We are firm believers that there are two types of people in the world. People with Mommy issues, or Daddy Issues. Luckily for us as creative collaborators, we both have mommy issues. But that’s the core of Spam’d; it’s a mother daughter love story.

(K) I’m estranged from my mom and have been for the last 5 years. But really losing touch with her was the impetus to me reconnecting with my Kanaka family here in Hawai’i. That sense of family and community is something I’ve needed to feel like I still have a home. I think all of us here know that what makes Hawai’i so special is that sense of community and kuleana we have for one another. Something we certainly saw first hand on January 13, 2018.

(L) If you were on the island and have an 808 number, then you remember this fateful text. I don’t know about you, but “This is Not a Drill” made it sound very real to me. I called my Mom expecting her to be freaking out, so I was very surprised to hear how chill she was. I was like, “shouldn’t we be saying anything important to each other right now, like I love you or like sorry I dropped you on your head as a child”? But instead she told me that the alarm is probably fake and she had to get off the phone cuz she was late for tennis.

Spam’d is a love letter to our Moms. As harsh and critical as they maybe they’ve always been there for us as our harshest critics and biggest supporters. Even when we’re fighting and the world feels like it’s ending we always come back together.
